Seattle Mariners demote outfielder Jarred Kelenic, reinstate Shed Long Jr.

The Seattle Mariners sent down struggling outfield prospect Jarred Kelenic on Monday and reinstated infielder Shed Long Jr. (right shin stress fracture) from the 60-day injured list.

Kelenic, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma after Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, was 8-83 (.096) this season and riding an 0-for-39 slump.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound 21-year-old is rated as the No. 4 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, No. 1 in the Mariners organization.

Seattle acquired Kelenic in a Dec. 3, 2018, trade with the Mets that sent Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz and cash considerations to New York.

Kelenic was a first-round pick of the Mets (No. 6 overall) in 2018.

Long, 25, who hit .323 during his seven-game rehab stint at Tacoma, was acquired by the Mariners from the New York Yankees for outfielder Josh Stowers on Jan. 21, 2019.

Seattle also transferred outfielder Sam Haggerty (right shoulder inflammation) to the 60-day IL.
