New York Giants star Saquon Barkley avoids serious injury

New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley exited Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals late in the fourth quarter after suffering what was an ugly-looking ankle injury.

Barkley’s foot got bent in an awkward position as he attempted a run with the game tied at 28 late in the final stanza.

Initial concerns about a serious injury have been alleviated following New York’s historic comeback win over Arizona. Various reports indicate that the Pro Bowler suffered a sprained ankle. X-rays were negative, which means there is no break. An MRI slated for Monday will tell us more about Barkley and his status against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday Night Football.

While Barkley is unlikely to go on a short week, this qualifies as good news for a Giants team that found itself down 20-0 at the half on Sunday before pulling off a thrilling 31-28 win.

Saquon Barkley Week 2 stats: 17 attempts, 63 yards, 6 receptions, 29 yards, 2 TD

The Giants had been outscored by a margin of 60-0 through the first two quarters of the season before dropping 31 second-half points against Arizona.

As for Barkley’s status moving forward, we’ll have more updates when they become available. New York must contend with a 49ers team on the road Thursday that has now won 12 consecutive regular-season games while averaging 32 points during that span. They would love to have Barkley in the fold for that one.
