The San Francisco Giants are looking to position themselves for a postseason spot in 2025.

They made a splashy signing early in the offseason, inking shortstop Willy Adames to a seven-year, $182 million contract. The Giants hope Adames can add some thump to a lineup that struggled in 2024, ranking 19th in OPS (.701), 16th in home runs (177), 17th in runs scored (693) and 20th in average (.239).

Adames hit 32 home runs and 33 doubles last year with the Milwaukee Brewers, which would’ve ranked first and second, respectively, on the Giants. He also posted a .794 OPS and 118 OPS+.

While Adames was the only major offensive upgrade so far, the Giants need more firepower to make a postseason run. That help could arrive in the form of a four-time All-Star slugger.

According to Bookies.com, the Giants have the best odds (25% at +300) to trade for Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Blue Jays traded Guerrero after he rejected their latest contract extension offer. Guerrero gave the Blue Jays a deadline of the first day of spring training to get a deal done. Now, he will become a free agent after the 2025 season.

“The San Francisco Giants make all the sense. The Giants have tried to add big-time free agents over the last few seasons, most notably Aaron Judge, but to little avail. No team is in a worse spot at first base heading into the 2025 season than the Giants; this gives them one of the top 1Bs in the game and the face of the franchise,” Adam Thompson of Bookies.com wrote.

The Blue Jays won’t be able to get as substantial a haul for Guerrero as they would have if they’d traded him last season. While San Francisco’s top prospect Bryce Eldridge would likely be off-limits, the Giants could build a trade package around promising outfielders James Tibbs III, Dakota Jordan, and Rayner Arias or pitcher Carson Whisenhunt. They also have former top prospects Marco Luciano and Luis Matos who could be included.

Guerrero, who finished sixth in AL MVP voting in 2024, had a fantastic season following a slow start. He hit 30 home runs and 44 doubles while posting a .940 OPS and 166 OPS+. In his six seasons with Toronto, he has accumulated 160 home runs with an .863 OPS and 137 OPS+.

Adding Guerrero to a lineup featuring Adames would immediately transform the Giants’ offensive outlook and potentially make them serious contenders in the competitive NL West.
