San Francisco Giants fire manager Gabe Kapler with three games left in regular season

The San Francisco Giants have fired manager Gabe Kapler with three games left to play in the regular season. Kapler’s led the Giants to a 78-81 record, and an early playoff elimination. The Giants sit 20 games back of the NL West division lead entering MLB games today, yet just 4.5 games out of the final Wild Card slot.

Still, it’s the second season in a row where Kapler has lost 81 games after finishing at .500 with 81 wins a year ago. After four seasons, leading a 295-248 record, which included an NLDS appearance and winning NL Manager of the Year in 2021, Kapler is out.

Here is San Francisco’s president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi’s statement on the Giants’ latest move:

“After making this recommendation to ownership and receiving their approval, I met with Gabe today to inform him of our decision. In his tenure as Giants manager, Gabe led our team through an unprecedented pandemic in 2020 and a franchise-record 107 wins and postseason berth in 2021. He has been dedicated and passionate in his efforts to improve the on-field performance of the San Francisco Giants and I have tremendous respect for him as a colleague and friend.”

Kapler joined the Giants in 2020 after being fired from the Philadelphia Phillies after a two-year tenure as manager. He led the Phillies to a 161-163 record and now has a 456-411 record across six seasons as a manager in MLB.

The Giants haven’t relieved a manager of their duties before a season has finished since 1985, when Jim Davenport was let go in favor of Roger Craig.
