For San Francico, this season in particularly important. The 49ers are coming off a second consecutive loss in the NFC Championship Game. They also have a major question mark at the all-important quarterback position following the departure of Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency.

San Francisco 49ers training camp storylines
The health of QB1 Brock Purdy
The 49ers’ brass has made it clear on more than one occasion how high they are on Purdy after a brilliant rookie season from the former seventh-round pick. But after undergoing offseason surgery on his throwing elbow, there was some question about whether Purdy would be back for 49ers training camp. Those has been quieted after he threw during minicamp earlier in the offseason.
“Now, based on the optimistic reports in recent weeks from Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan, Purdy is the clear favorite to open the season as the 49ers’ starting quarterback,” Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area on Brock Purdy.
With Purdy sidelined earlier in the off-season program, former No. 3 pick Trey Lance and veteran free agent signing Sam Darnold split first-team reps. It now looks like they will all be Purdy’s once training camp gets going.
Nick Bosa contract extension
The 49ers have stayed true to timelines when it comes to contract extensions for star players in the past. Typically, they get done right before or during the early stages of camp.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel inked his three-year, $71.55 million extension back on July 31 of 2022. All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner signed a five-year extension in July of 2021 while George Kittle’s deal came in August of 2020.
Entering the final year of his rookie contract, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year seems to think something will get done before Week 1.
“It’s pretty high,” Bosa said when asked about his confidence level that a contract will get done soon. “I think I am pretty confident about that. I think I’ll get what I deserve.”
Bosa, 25, is coming off a 2022 campaign in which he recorded 48 quarterback hits, 19 tackles for loss and 18.5 sacks. Once signed, Bosa will become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Even if an extension is not signed ahead of 49ers training camp, Bosa will report.
Offensive line situation
San Francisco made the right decision in not matching the Denver Broncos’ five-year, $87.5 million contract offer to right tackle Mike McGlinchey back in March. He’s been far too inconsistent to get paid left tackle money.
However, this will create a major story heading into training camp. Rising fourth-year player Colton McKivitz is slated to start opposite Trent Williams at tackle. San Francisco’s brass has a certain level of confidence in him. But with just five NFL starts to his name, it’s an unknown. Former mid-round pick Jaylon Moore and free-agent signing Matt Pryor will also compete for the job during camp.
Players to watch during 49ers training camp
Trey Lance
This one is pretty obvious. San Francisco dealt away the farm ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft to acquire the No. 3 pick, selecting Lance in the process. It was a bold move given his lack of playing time in college at North Dakota State.
Fast forward over two years, and there’s an open question about Lance’s future with the 49ers. He was the subject of trade rumors earlier in the offseason. Through two NFL seasons, Lance has thrown all of 102 passes. Dating back to 2020 with North Dakota State, that number stands at 132 passes. There’s been a massive amount of hype surrounding Lance, but he needs to show something during camp and the preseason for that hype to actually mean something. If he falls behind Darnold on the 49ers’ depth chart, that will be a tell.
Cameron Latu
A third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Latu heads into 49ers training camp with a clear opportunity to earn the TE2 spot behind George Kittle. San Francisco selected the former Alabama star to be a complement to what Kittle brings to the table. Given the 49ers’ lack of production behind Kittle at tight end last season, it will be interesting to see if the 6-foot-5 Latu shows out with his impressive athleticism.
Isaiah Oliver
The 26-year-old Oliver was an underrated signing during free agency. With the 49ers having lost their longest-tenured player in that of Jimmie Ward, finding someone with experience to compete in the slot was a priority.
In 12 games with the Atlanta Falcons last season, this former second-round pick yielded a mere 76.2 QB rating when targeted. He’s also considered one of the better run-stuffing slot corners in the game. Oliver is the hands-down favorite to earn San Francisco’ starting slot job. But he’ll face competition from Samuel Womack and fellow free agent signing Myles Hartfsfield.
Drake Jackson
San Francisco’s second-round pick in 2022, Jackson showed some flashes as a rookie opposite Nick Bosa. He recorded eight passes defended, six quarterback hits and three sacks in limited action. Unfortunately, Jackson saw regression as the season progressed. For the 49ers, that was all about his frame holding up at an NFL level.
The 49ers’ brass is excited about what it has seen from Jackson in his first full offseason. It now must equate to live-game action after San Francisco lost Charles Omenihu and Samson Ebukam in free agency. It’s either that or the 49ers relying on former Raiders first-round bust Clelin Ferrell or veteran journeyman Kerry Hyder Jr.

49ers training camp has been held in Santa Clara since all the way back in 2003. Once the team moved from San Francisco, camp started to take place outside the SAP Performance Facility, adjacent to Levi’s Stadium.

The official dates for 49ers training camp have not yet been announced. Typically, camp open in late June. Last year saw cam open on July 26 and run for three weeks. All practices ran from 10:15 AM to 12:15 PM local time with the “Back Together” training camp practice being on July 30.
