San Francisco 49ers forfeit NFL Draft pick after accounting error

The defending NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers are in some hot water with the NFL due to what is being described as payroll accounting errors.

According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, San Francisco is being docked its fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The team’s fourth-round selection in April’s draft will now be the final pick in that round after the compensatory selections.

“We take responsibility and accept the imposed discipline from the NFL due to a clerical payroll error. At no time did we mislead or otherwise deceive the League or gain a competitive advantage in connection with the payroll mistake.”

It does seem to be an honest mistake. Though, that doesn’t matter to the powers that be within the NFL league office in New York City.

The 49ers will still have 10 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. So, this is not necessarily the end of the world. Though, it is rather surprising given how well run the organization has been in recent years.
