Update: It was announced shortly after Thursday’s game that Rhys Hoskins suffered a torn left ACL and will miss the entire 2023 MLB season.
The Philadelphia Phillies are slated to open their regular season in a week. Rhys Hoskins likely won’t be on the field for that game against the Texas Rangers.
Taking part in a meaningless Spring Training game on Thursday, Hoskins suffered an ugly non-contact knee injury as he attempted to field a ball behind first base. The scene from Florida was not great.
In any sport, non-contact injuries of this ilk typically aren’t good. Respected sports doctor David Chao indicated that he’s “not optimistic” after seeing a replay of the injury.
Obviously, we’re not going to speculate on the severity of the injury until further updates are provided from the Phillies themselves.

Rhys Hoskins stats (2022): .246 average, 30 HR, 79 RBI, .794 OPS
Hoskins, 30, had been in the midst of a great Spring Training before suffering this injury, hitting .355 with a 1.280 OPS in 11 games. That included belting four homers.
Rhys Hoskins is projected to hit third in the Phillies’ lineup this season, behind star free agent signing Trea Turner and reigning NL home run champion Kyle Schwarber. If he’s out for any extended period, Alec Bohm would likely take over first base duties.
