Report: Seahawks expected to release both Richard Sherman and Jeremy Lane

The Seattle purge continues. On Wednesday, multiple reports emerged that the Seahawks would likely be releasing three-time First-Team All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman to save $11 million in cap space entering the new league year.

On Thursday, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times once again confirmed this while adding that Seattle will also likely release cornerback Jeremy Lane, which will save $4.75 million against the cap. As Condotta notes, this is very much about the finances.

“Combined with the trade of Michael Bennett, which saves $2.2 million, Seattle would be creating roughly $18 million additional in cap room — Seattle is listed as having roughly $13 million as of Thursday morning.”

The Legion of Boom was always destined to dissolve. We wrote about it last season, noting that, as amazing as this unit has been in the past the players are aging and Seattle has some other, more pressing needs.

For Sherman, it’s going to be very interesting to see what happens next. He’s not able to pass a physical right now after undergoing a second surgery on his Achilles, which ruptured last season. He’s coming off a second year in a row in which he was injured, too, and he’ll be 30 later this month. Father Time appears to be coming for the former All-Pro, and we know how that worked out for Darrelle Revis in recent years.
