The Miami Marlins are dealing with a COVID-19 problem right now as three of their top players have reportedly tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
Marlins pitcher Jose Urena, two other starters test positive for COVID-19
On Sunday morning, Jon Heyman of MLB.com reported that Marlins starting pitcher Jose Urena was scratched from his start against the Phillies after testing positive.
Shortly afterward, Craig Mish indicated there could be more going on but was cautious about making any statements. That’s when Heyman once again reported on the situation, noting two starting position players have also tested positive.
MLB COVID-19 testing numbers were looking good
This troubling development comes on the heels of extraordinarily good news regarding MLB testing numbers.
Last week, MLB announced that just four players had tested positive in the previous week. A total of 10,939 tests were conducted by the league. In addition to the four players, just two staff members of teams tested positive. That’s a positive test rate of 0.5 percent
As noted by Heyman, however, Florida is currently one of the worst-hit areas on the planet for COVID-19 outbreaks. According to the Miami Herald, “Through the pandemic, Florida has 423,855 cases and 5,972 deaths.”
