The San Diego Padres have reportedly landed free agent Manny Machado, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
According to Mark Feinsand, it’s a 10-year, $300 million deal.
This is a huge signing, not only because it finally takes one of the two biggest free agents off the board — the other being Bryce Harper — but because it also signifies a massive move for a Padres team that hasn’t been nationally relevant for years.
San Diego was a late arrival to the Harper/Machado sweepstakes, but once the Padres got their feet into the water it was clear they were all-in to land one of these stars. Recently, the team’s general manager met with Machado and his wife in Florida. Clearly, that attention paid off.
The 26-year-old shortstop will instantly upgrade the Padres’ roster. Over his career, Machado has a .282 average, .822 OPS and has hit 175 home runs and 513 RBI.
