Oklahoma State linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga became one of the first college football players to test positive for the coronavirus since student-athletes were allowed to return to campus. Now, he isn’t even the only player on the Cowboys’ roster to test positive.
Five Oklahoma State football players test positive for coronavirus
Oklahoma State University outlined a system to slowly bring student-athletes back to campus, per Stillwater’s FOX 25. The early steps would start welcoming football players back for COVID-19 testing, with the hopes of clearing them to start working out at the team’s facilities on June 15.
According to SiriusXM’s Gabe Ikard, five of Oklahoma State’s players have now tested positive for the coronavirus. As a result, freshmen that were expected to arrive on Tuesday were told to stay at home.
It marks a setback for Oklahoma State and serves as a potential warning to programs across the country. The NCAA lifted the moratorium on voluntary workouts, beginning on June 1, which brought excitement and hope that college football will be played this season.
There will be dozens of players that test positive for the coronavirus when they return to campus and it’s why many ripped Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy for his comments in April.
Universities will need to look out for the safety of their student-athletes, which means not letting them even return to workout facilities until they are cleared. This is why the Big 12 commissioner warned about disruptions, because they will happen during this pandemic.
