Philadelphia Eagles land star running back D’Andre Swift in NFL Draft day trade

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to cook during the 2023 NFL Draft, adding more talent to a roster that nearly won the Super Bowl a season ago.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Philadelphia has acquired stud young running back D’Andre Swift from the Detroit Lions in exchange for draft compensation. It is said to be a fourth-round pick in 2025 and a seventh-round selection heading back to Detroit.

The Lions’ decision to select Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft Thursday evening put Swift firmly on the trade block.

As for Philadelphia, it was linked to consensus No. 1 running back Bijan Robinson throughout the entire pre-draft process after losing Miles Sanders to the Carolina Panthers in free agency. Once Robinson went to the Atlanta Falcons at eight, the Philadelphia Eagles turned their attention to Swift.

This could be a monumental move for one of the top title contenders heading into the 2023 season.

Despite some injury concerns over the course of his first three seasons in the NFL, D’Andre Swift has proven to be electric with the ball in his hands.

D’Andre Swift stats (2020-22): 1,680 rushing yards, 156 receptions, 1,198 receiving yards, 2,878 total yards, 5.5 yards per touch, 25 TD

Acquiring a dual threat to go with Jalen Hurts in the backfield is an absolute boon for the Eagles. Swift’s ability in the passing game will also play a role as he teams up with skill-position players such as wide receivers DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown as well as tight end Dallas Goedert.

As an aside, Swift played his college ball at Georgia. It should come as no surprise that general manager Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles went back to the well with this trade.

They selected two Georgia players in the first three rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft before doubling down with multiple first-round picks from the Bulldogs in this year’s draft and adding defensive back Kelee Ringo on Saturday.
