The Philadelphia 76ers are going to be extremely active in NBA free agency. Fresh off a first-round exit in the NBA Playoffs, they are set to have north of $55 million to spend against the salary cap when the market opens this summer.

It’s in this that Philadelphia has been linked to some of the biggest names set to hit the open market. That includes the real possibility of chasing after Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

However, Philadelphia has been linked more to Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers. George, 34, has a player option worth $48.79 million for next season. He’s almost guaranteed to decline said option and hit free agency.

Front office head Daryl Morey and Co. have been linked to wings who could help balance out a roster that’s headed by center Joel Embiid and guard Tyrese Maxey. Could George be the answer?

“They’re looking for another star, but they also need players who can fill various roles. PG-13 is both, which is why sources familiar with Philly’s strategy say he is the team’s plan A in free agency.”

Despite some injury concerns over the years, George continues to play at a high level. The nine-time All-Star averaged 22.6 points to go with 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists on 47% shooting from the field last season.

Philadelphia fell to the New York Knicks in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs. The team needs to find that third star to team up with Embiid and Maxey. While likely more of a short-term option, George fits in that regard.
