Pat Shurmur: Odell Beckham Jr. wants to be great

Rumors and reports have surrounded Odell Beckham Jr. and the New York Giants all offseason, but first-year head coach Pat Shurmur isn’t adding to the drama.

When the star receiver showed up for the opening day of the team’s conditioning program, Shurmur only had good things to say about Beckham.

“I really believe Odell is a professional. He wants to be great. He understands the importance of the offseason. He’s a competitive guy … I’m glad he’s here today.”

Since the end of the 2017 season, Beckham has been a potential trade candidate. New York’s asking price of multiple first-round draft picks appears to have steered teams away, but the Los Angeles Rams were a suitor until acquiring Brandin Cooks.

Beckham, who seems to have regained a clean bill of health in his recovery from an ankle injury, is likely to remain with the Giants in 2018.

Knowing that, it’s a commendable decision for Beckham to attend the conditioning program regardless of circumstance. And his new coach certainly appreciates having a great player in the building.
