‘No sure bet’ Robert Griffin III makes Ravens’ final roster

Robert Griffin III

Robert Griffin III has a second chance to make a big impression in the NFL after landing a job with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason, but at this point just making the roster seems like a long shot.

As noted by Mike Jones of USA Today, RG3 is finding it difficult just to land some second-team reps now that Baltimore has Lamar Jackson in the fold.

“Even securing the backup role could prove challenging,” Jones wrote. “Sure, Griffin took the some second-team reps during Thursday’s practice, but so too did Jackson. During some segments of the day, Griffin got merely split a handful of snaps with fourth quarterback Josh Woodrum, who’s basically an offseason arm. So it’s no sure bet that Griffin even makes the regular season roster.”

Given the paltry contract Griffin signed when he joined the Ravens, this isn’t all that shocking. Also, it’s been a few years since the former Heisman winner was able to put together what anyone could consider a successful NFL campaign.

Injuries derailed his once-promising career in Washington, where he won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors way back in 2012 over none other than Andrew Luck. And his short tenure in Cleveland was no different.

Baltimore doesn’t typically keep more than two quarterbacks on its roster. John Harbaugh cannot stop lavishing Jackson with praise. The writing is on the wall here. Griffin is almost assuredly going to be auditioning for other teams this preseason, and it’s likely he will be relegated to playing with other players fighting for roster spots when he gets his shots in those games.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how this former star performs this summer.
