Robert Griffin’s salary is mostly nonguaranteed

Robert Griffin III

The Baltimore Ravens have provided Robert Griffin III a chance to resurrect his career, but the former No. 2 overall pick’s contract suggests he’s not assured of a roster spot for the 2018 NFL season.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the former Baylor star received a $100,000 signing bonus with $1 million in base salary that is not guaranteed.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise, since Griffin has appeared in just five NFL games over the last three seasons. Most recently, he played for the Cleveland Browns in 2016.

With no other experienced quarterback on the roster behind Joe Flacco, the nonguaranteed contract leaves open the possibility of Baltimore selecting a quarterback in the 2018 draft.

If the Ravens pick Lamar Jackson or Mason Rudolph, for example, they could decide to move on from Griffin before the regular season even begins. He’s effectively a low-risk security blanket if the draft isn’t favorable for Baltimore.

But at this point of his career, Griffin is probably content with that role. He has another chance to prove himself, no matter how modest the opportunity may be.
