Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson made a big contribution in Team Canada’s 10-2 blowout win over France. He finished with the first Gordie Howe Hat Trick in Olympics history.
Wilson got things going early on when he scored Canada’s first goal of the game. The 31-year-old got to the front and buried Drew Doughty’s rebound for the tally.
Later on, Wilson added to his point total by assisting Connor McDavid on a breakaway goal in the third. The Capitals forward had returned to the top line alongside McDavid and Macklin Celebrini.
Throughout the game, Wilson made his presence known with his aggressive play. He was once again very physical with his forechecking abilities and two-way play.
Halfway through the third, Pierre Crinon bumped Nathan MacKinnon and sent him down to the ice. That’s when Wilson watched from the bench, returned to the ice and dropped the gloves with Crinon.
As a result, both players received two minutes for roughing, five minutes for fighting, and automatic game misconducts. As Capitals fans may know, Wilson is not afraid to stand up for his teammates.
The 31-year-old recorded one goal, one assist, and a plus-1 rating on Sunday. He also finished with two shots and seven penalty minutes through 11:31 of ice time.
Canada’s victory was so lopsided to the point where they outshot France 46-14. The Canadians now finish 3-0-0 in group play.
