On Friday, Washington Capitals general manager Chris Patrick spoke to the media about the state of the team. The season is already halfway over, with some big questions that Patrick answered in the press conference.

Here are some key answers Patrick gave:

Capitals’ Current Struggles

Right now, the Capitals sit in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division at 24-18-6. The team is currently on the outside looking in, and two points behind the last Wild Card spot in the East.

Two of the biggest factors regarding the Capitals’ current struggles are injuries and inconsistency. The last time the team assembled a winning streak was early December.

“This year, right away, felt like right away, we lost Pierre-Luc [Dubois], which was a big loss to the group,” said Patrick. “That kind of started the adversity. We’re still right there standings-wise, and the league is extremely tight. If we can get healthy and stay healthy, we’ll be in hopefully good spot to make a push.”

Possible Trade Deadline Moves

The Capitals could make some big moves before the March 6 trade deadline, which is after the Olympic break. Patrick said that that team is “actively pursuing an addition.”

“For us, we view our biggest need as a higher-end skilled winger,” said Patrick. “Those aren’t always available for us at the deadline. When they become available, they become available. We’re going to keep trying to pursue those guys if they’re out there.”

One big name that Capitals fans have been throwing around online is Artemi Panarin. Currently with the New York Rangers, Panarin could help the team make a late playoff push.

Ovechkin and Carlson’s Futures

With Alex Ovechkin already in his 21st season, there are many big questions regarding his future. As of right now, there have been no discussions regarding an extension or his NHL future after this season.

“I hope we can do something that helps us in the short term for this team going into the playoffs again,” said Patrick. “For Alex having another run in the playoffs.”

However, the Capitals have had discussions with John Carlson and his agent about a possible extension. The 36-year-old defenseman has been with the franchise his entire career since being drafted in 2008.

Cole Hutson Taking Time

Cole Hutson was selected by the Capitals in the second round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. However, he is currently focusing on his collegiate hockey career at Boston University.

The Capitals did originally check in on Quinn Hughes, but didn’t want to give up any high-end prospects. Hutson was originally mentioned in that discussion.

“I like Cole Hutson and want to see what he can do in a Washington Capitals sweater,” Patrick said. “That wasn’t a piece I was willing to move.”

Ilya Protas Making Noise

Ilya Protas, younger brother of Aliaksei, has been making progress for Hershey this season. The 19-year-old was just named to the 2026 AHL All-Star Classic. Patrick was asked about whether the younger Protas would be called up this season.

“He’s been great,” Patrick stated about Protas. “We had high expectations for him coming into the season, and he’s met or exceeded those. Very excited about his future with the organization.”

As the season continues, the Capitals will see if they need to call up any more prospects, including Protas. However, Patrick doesn’t feel the need to rush anyone right now.

“You just want to make sure you’re putting these guys in a position to have success initially,” said Patrick. “Especially if it’s their first time playing in the NHL.
