We’re just two days away from New Jersey Devils training camp kicking off, but if you wanted your first taste of Devils hockey this season, you got it in Western New York over the weekend, as the Devils went 2-1-o in the Prospects Challenge. Elsewhere, it’s been an eventful weekend for a Devils’ division foe in DC, and could the Luke Hughes contract saga be coming to an end? Perhaps.

NHL.com: The Devils’ prospects wrapped up their weekend in Buffalo with a 6-4 loss to the Bruins’ prospects on Sunday. There were some definite bright spots though, namely from Matyas Melovsky who lit the lamp twice in yesterday’s affair. New Utica Comets head honcho Ryan Parent noted that “It was a really good showing by a lot of the players and there’s a lot to be excited about moving forward.” MORE HERE

The Athletic ($) It’s been an eventful weekend for the Capitals, as the team announced Sunday that assistant coach Mitch Love has been placed on leave while the NHL conducts an investigation. Love was on several organizations’ head coaching shortlists over the summer, having interviewed with the Bruins, Kraken, and Penguins for their vacancies. However, in different Caps-related news, the club revealed that they are bringing back the (admittedly glorious) “Screamin’ Eagle” alternate jerseys for this season. The Hockey Network, more here
