Matyas Melovsky is forcing his way up the ladder. The New Jersey Devils signed Melovsky to a two-year entry-level contract beginning in 2026-27 on Monday, per the team.

The 21-year-old (born May 25, 2004) is in his first pro season in North America on a one-year, one-way AHL deal with Utica (Devils’ AHL affiliate). The 6’1”, 190-lb right shot has 13 points (3G-10A) in 35 games.

The Uničov, Czechia native previously played in the QMJHL with Baie-Comeau from 2022-23 to 2024-25, totaling 201 points (50G-151A) in 169 regular-season games and 38 points (11G-27A) in 35 playoff games. He led QMJHL rookies with 52 assists in 2022-23.

Melovsky is an intriguing prospect. Despite being a sixth round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft (171st overall), he entered his draft year known as a skilled playmaking forward.

According to his Eliteprospects profile, “Melovský’s physical skills feed his playmaking game. He leans against opponents, squeezes them off the puck, and then immediately launches it to teammates standing in more space. But he’s not just a complementary player. His give-and-goes and occasional dangles under stick put him under the spotlight.”

Melovsky spent a lot of time centering winger Lenni Hämeenaho while skating with the Comets. Shane Lachance is another Devils forward prospect with NHL upside Melovsky centered as well.

Internationally, Melovsky represented Czechia at the 2022 IIHF U18 Worlds and 2024 U20 Worlds, tying for the tournament lead in assists (10) and helping win bronze in 2024.

The Czech forward was a standout earlier this season when participating in the Prospect Challenge in Buffalo. Melovsky registered two goals and three points in three games, displaying smooth skating at top speeds, as well a great hands with the puck in transition and while playmaking. His hockey IQ qas also impressive, which he displayed on both of his goals.
