So, last night was an encouring New Jersey Devils win, right?

That’s not me saying, “Maybe they’ll make the playoffs!” They won’t.

But, the style of play New Jersey showed last night—more open ice and playing a bit more loose—clearly showed this team has the ability to contend. It’ll just have to be next year. And with the right tweaks.

And, of course, it all hinges on Jack Hughes. More on him and New Jersey’s impressive win below.

Elsewhere, Jason Robertson’s next contract, ex-Blueshirts coach on the NYR struggles, and more.

Devils Trade Rumors & News

New Jersey Hockey Now: Well, who saw this coming? The Dallas Stars are a bit banged up. However, it’s still impressive the Devils stunned them, routing Dallas to a 6-4 victory with four first period goals. Jack Hughes, man. NHL Trade Talk, News & National Hockey Now

Forever Blueshirts: Here’s why ex-New York Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette says last season was a much tougher battle than the Blueshirts current struggles.

TSN: It’s fascinating to see how the Pittsburgh Penguins went from a team everyone wrote off as probably a bottom feeder, to what they are now. The result is even more fascinating, however. Because, for a while, Erik Karlsson was a top trade candidate as the Pens descended through the years. Now, there’s no plan to move on from the Swedish defenseman this summer.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Speaking of the Pittsburgh Penguins, did the NHL send them a message in their 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche last night? Dan Kingerski dives in.

The Athletic ($): Shayna Goldman takes a look at Jason Robertson’s next contract and how the Stars can make it fit. If not, the Devils should probably be banging on Jim Nill’s door.
