The Montreal Canadiens put their hands on the most aggressive player in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, selecting prospect Gleb Pugachyov with the 26th overall pick.
In fact, the Habs were so excited by the possibility of adding Pugachyov to the mix, they traded up to ensure he’d be available once they took to the podium.
Gleb Pugachyov Physicality
He’s a 6’3″ forward who can play on both wings, but was most often used on the right side of the ice during his very busy 2025-26 campaign, which saw him play in three different leagues (MHL, VHL, KHL).
Of course, given that 18-year-olds aren’t given an abundance of ice time in the KHL, we must guard against spending too much time worrying about his production (13 GP, 2G, 1A) versus much older, professional opponents.
In 33 games with Chaika Nizhny in the MHL, Russia’s equivalent to the CHL, Pugachyov scored 10 goals and 14 assists. He contributed three goals and six assists in 16 playoff appearances.
It should also be noted that he’s a fantastic skater, full stop.
Often times, when discussing a player of his stature, analysts will suggest they’re decent skaters… for their size.
But that’s not the case for Pugachyov, who uses his excellent skating to be a constant threat on the forecheck. This, in turn, allows him to deliver a bounty of thunderous hits on a nightly basis.
And make no mistake, controlled violence is the name of the game for Pugachyov, though he’s quite adept in several different situations. Discipline, or a lack thereof, was a recurring theme for Pugachyov last year, but that’s an issue that can be ironed out with professional coaching.
“We’re always looking for competitors,” explained Martin Lapointe. “This year, every player we picked had character, and we’re very happy. Pugachyov has size, is a great skater, and knows how to carry the puck. His potential is very interesting.”
