The Detroit Red Wings began NHL free agency with Dylan Larkin in trade rumors, and that has not changed. Larkin is still a member of the Red Wings, despite requesting a trade from the organization. However, what is the 29-year-old captain’s most likely trade destination if he is moved?
The Athletic’s Chris Johnston believes it is between the Red Wings or Minnesota Wild for Larkin right now, as said on the Chris Johnston Show on July 2. Therefore, Johnston believes the star center will either stay with Detroit or be traded to Minnesota. The NHL insider also said the Wild have a real desire to acquire Larkin.
However, what if talks fall apart and the Red Wings still want to move him? A few teams still make sense for Larkin.
Potential trade destinations for Dylan Larkin outside of Minnesota Wild

Larkin still wants to play for a new NHL organization during the 2026-27 season, but Minnesota needs to give Detroit a package that is worthy of accepting. Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman wants players more than picks, and there are still a few teams that make sense for Larkin.
The Vegas Golden Knights were initially on Larkin’s trade destination list, so this is an easy connection. If not Minnesota, Vegas has been the second-most mentioned team for Larkin. The Knights would have to trade some players to the Red Wings, but they could pounce on the opportunity with the Wild unable to close the deal.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars are another ideal landing spot. Dallas is one of the NHL’s best organizations, and with Jason Robertson‘s future in doubt, Larkin would be a great addition. Could Yzerman pull off Larkin for Robertson? For now, that might be the most appealing option outside of Minnesota’s Matt Boldy.
Finally, what about the Tampa Bay Lightning? Over the last decade, Tampa has become one of the premier destinations in the NHL, giving players a great chance of competing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Lightning defenseman J.J. Moser would be one of the more intriguing additions for Detroit.
If Larkin wants to play for a new team, Minnesota seems to be his best chance. If the Wild can’t close out a trade, it is unclear what would happen with Larkin.
