New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel broke his silence Tuesday on the controversy surrounding photos of him with NFL reporter Dianna Russini, admitting the images led to “difficult conversations” with his family, the organization, coaches, and players.

The New York Post’s Page Six published the photos and accompanying story back on April 7th. The images showed Vrabel and Russini — who are both married — holding hands, embracing, and relaxing together at the adults-only Ambiente resort.

Everyone involved professed innocence, even though everyone involved tried to squash the story.

Speaking at a press conference at Gillette Stadium, Vrabel opened with thanks to the media for their patience on what he called a “personal and private matter.”

Vrabel’s ‘Difficult Conversations’ Do Little to Silence Skeptics Over Russini Photos

He proceeded to make remarks that cast doubt on his original assertion that the photos showed “a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable.”

“I’ve had some difficult conversations with people that I care about, with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players. Those have been positive and productive, ” Vrabel told reporters.

“We believe in order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions. That includes me. That starts with me. I never want our actions to negatively affect the team,” he added. “We never want to be the cause of a distraction.”

Vrabel vowed to deliver “the best version of me going forward” as the Patriots prepare for the NFL Draft.

“There are comments and questions that I’ve answered for the team and with the team. We’ll keep those private,” he said.

Sorry, Mike, but this isn’t a private matter. A potential affair between an NFL coach and a prominent NFL reporter is newsworthy.

Notably, he was asked by a reporter if he stood by his original assertion that the photos were “completely innocent,” but he deflected.

“I appreciate the question,” he replied. “I’m going to focus on our football team. I think I addressed what I felt like was important.”

These measured comments have done little to silence skeptics. As the Patriots look ahead to the draft, the lingering scrutiny suggests the story may continue to hover over the organization despite Vrabel’s attempt to move past it.

Russini, however, can’t really move past it as easily as Vrabel is trying to. She was forced to resign from The Athletic.
