After the San Francisco 49ers appeared set to run away with the NFC West, suddenly, two consecutive losses has opened a bigger window for the Seattle Seahawks to emerge after a 4-2 start. Yet, the Seahawks have had their own troubles, such as Uchenna Nwosu being ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn pectoral muscle.
Nwosu’s unfortunate injury has opened the door for Frank Clark’s return, but as Albert Breer notes, the Seahawks are expected to be active, seeking more passing-rushing depth ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.
So which edge rushers could the Seahawks still have their eyes on? Here are just a few that have been tossed around.
Derek Barnett
The Philadelphia Eagles have a deep stable of pass-rushers, and Derek Barnett has been a part of that ferocious rotation for seven seasons. But he hasn’t started a game in two seasons and has played in just 21 percent of the team’s defensive snaps this year. He’s being slowly phased out, and the Eagles are open to a deal. Still just 27, Barnett is in the final year of his contract and shouldn’t cost more than a late-round draft pick.
Leonard Williams
He may not be an edge rusher, but Leonard Williams reminded everyone of the impact he can make in the New York Giants’ Week 7 win over the Washington Commanders, where he blocked a kick and recorded a sack in the seven-point victory. Said to be available for the right price, Williams has a big cap number this season but is also in the final year of his contract. If the Giants fall short again on Sunday, a team like the Seahawks could be enticed by a rental.
Danielle Hunter
If the Seahawks really want to swing for the fences, why not trade for the NFL’s sack leader? The Minnesota Vikings are said to be listening to trade offers for several of their players, and Danielle Hunter might even grow accustomed to the 12th Man, giving the Seahawks a shot to re-sign him in free agency at the end of the year. If the Seahawks are willing to part with more draft compensation, Hunter may be available, and he’d provide a massive jolt to this team’s ability to pressure QBs.
