The San Francisco 49ers’ defense will be going through another transition period this summer and early in the 2024 season, however, one of their top players on that side of the ball gave some insight into why they will quickly make the switch and get back to their elite levels in the new season.

The 49ers have been a powerhouse team in the NFL over the last five years in no small part due to the dominant play of their defense. The franchise’s rise back to prominence also coincides with the ascendence of stars like Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, and Arik Armstead.

However, last season they were not as formidable as in years past under the guidance of Steve Wilks. A veteran NFL coach who took over for DeMeco Ryans after he departed to take the top job with the Houston Texans. That kind of play will not do if the organization hopes to win its first Super Bowl since 1994 and that is why they replaced Wilks with Nick Sorensen this offseason.

However, with bringing in another new defensive coordinator — the team’s third in as many years — there is a likely transition period that comes with it and a slower process to reach peak form. But during a recent appearance on the Candlestick Chronicles podcast, three-time Pro Bowler Fred Warner made it seem as if Sorenson and the unit could get off to a fast start since he was an internal choice to be the new DC.

“For me specifically, I do have the green dot so I’m the one that’s hearing that communication with the defensive coordinator. That does take time to develop and I know it’s gonna be seamless with Nick,” Warner said. ‘I think having him around the building these last couple of years has been awesome … I love Nick, I love what he’s about. Love the fact that he’s played the game for a long time, understands ball, is a great leader, and understands that we haven’t played our best defense as of late and that we need to return to that.

“And so it’s been crystal clear what the standard is moving forward, and yeah, I’m really excited about it. I think it’ll be a great hire and move going forward.”

Sorenson has been a part of the San Francisco 49ers staff since 2022, serving as a defensive assistant and defensive passing game specialist in that time. If the team is going to win it all this year, they need to get back to their previous elite form on defense.
