Von Miller

Whenever Von Miller signs a long-term deal with the Denver Broncos, he’s expected to haul in more money than what Justin Houston signed for with the Kansas City Chiefs last year, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Rapoport made it clear the two sides are not close to a deal yet, meaning Miller will be tagged with a franchise designation. The Denver Post is reporting the Broncos will use the exclusive franchise tag on Miller, which means he would earn $14.04 million if a long-term deal is not struck before the July 15 deadline.

What’s interesting is that a long-term deal would almost certainly give Miller more per year than $14 million. This means John Elway might be inclined to let the linebacker play this upcoming year out on the tag and address a long-term deal again next year, though this is purely speculation on my part.

Both sides have indicated they are dedicated to get a long-term deal done. Though, at this time it seems more likely that they will get it done later this spring or perhaps even near the July 15 deadline, much like what happened last year between Denver and receiver Demaryius Thomas.

Whenever it happens, Miller will almost certainly end up being the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL. After putting up 60 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and an interception in five years with the Broncos, not to mention his efforts during the team’s Super Bowl run, he has earned that distinction.
