When Mike Tomlin walked away from the Pittsburgh Steelers after 19 seasons, the organization granted the rest of his coaching staff permission to find a new job. New head coach Mike McCarthy and the rest of the Steelers’ front office have been busy trying to fill in the gaps ever since.
One area of importance will be locking in a new offensive coordinator for a team that hasn’t had a top-10 scoring offense since 2018. The Steelers may call upon one of McCarthy’s old pals.
According to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers are looking to interview Scott Tolzien for their offensive coordinator position. Tolzien, 38, currently operates as the quarterbacks coach of the New Orleans Saints.
Before that, McCarthy hired Tolzien as a coaching assistant for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. In 2023, McCarthy promoted Tolzien to quarterbacks coach. Once the Cowboys cut ties with McCarthy after the 2024 season, Tolzien landed on his feet in the same role in New Orleans, where he got to work with second-round rookie Tyler Shough.
Tolzien, a former undrafted NFL QB, also played for McCarthy for three seasons from 2013 to 2015 with the Green Bay Packers. McCarthy clearly has a high opinion of Tolzien, and now he may make him his right-hand man, running the offense in Pittsburgh. If hired, the next question becomes whether Aaron Rodgers will rejoin them too.
