The New York Giants are getting the gang back together.

After months of speculation, most of which was brushed off as wishful thinking, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that the Giants signed Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year contract on Monday.

It’s undoubtedly a huge win for Giants fans clamoring for the team icon to return to New York. Yet, how big a win is this for the Giants’ team?

Adding Beckham is sure to lift the spirits inside and outside of the locker room. Many of the team’s players grew up watching OBJ and likely won’t ever forget some of his flashy catches as a member of Big Blue. However, he’s also set to turn 34 later this season.

Beckham hasn’t had a 1,000-yard season since 2019. He hasn’t topped 500 yards since 2023. The last time he played in an NFL game was January 28, 2024, as a member of the Baltimore Ravens. Beckham hasn’t topped 100 yards in a game since November 16, 2023.

One of the biggest reasons why Beckham remained a free agent for so long, is because he’s not the type to be a special teams standout. The last time he played more than one snap on special teams came in 2018, his final year with the Giants.

In New York, Beckham will slot in behind Malik Nabers once the Giants’ top receiver returns to health following last year’s ACL tear. The Giants have a long line of competition behind Nabers, led by Darius Slayton, free agent signees Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin, third-round rookie Malachi Fields, and former third-round pick Jalin Hyatt.

After Nabers, OBJ could feasibly slot in anywhere on the Giants’ depth chart, but unless he lands one of the team’s top three receiver jobs, it remains to be seen just how much of an impact he can make. At least now he’ll be given a chance to prove any skeptics wrong.

Beckham’s 5,476 receiving yards rank second in Giants franchise history behind Amani Toomer’s 9,497 yards. Now OBJ will be given a chance to build upon those numbers, but first, he’ll need to make the 53-man roster.
