It looks like the New England Patriots could be in the running for one of the top defensive backs left in NFL free agency, and it would also be a reunion with a former star.

The Patriots entered the offseason with a huge amount of salary cap space. Giving them the unique ability to immediately improve the roster after a disastrous 4-13 last-place finish in 2023. However, they have not made the big splash in free agency that many expected.

While they used some of their cap space to re-sign key players like Mike Onwenu and Kendrick Bourne, the most notable addition they have made thus far is signing journeyman quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Heading into the week the team has over $50 million available to spend (via Over The Cap) — which is the most in the NFL. And it looks like they could use some of those funds on a veteran cornerback they need.

On Tuesday, Mass Live reported that while Stephon Gilmore prefers to return to the Dallas Cowboys in 2024, “the veteran corner was open to all options, including another go-round with the Patriots.”

The five-time Pro Bowler played four seasons with the Patriots, including earning his first of two All-Pro honors during their most recent championship season in 2018. Since leaving New England after the 2019 season he has added another Pro Bowl appearance to his resume but is also finally showing the signs of a player with 12 years of NFL action on his body.

The 33-year-old made just under $8 million last season with the Dallas Cowboys but his most recent team is cash strapped and may pass on bringing him back and divert their money to other areas of need this offseason.
