New England Patriots training camp is closing in and after the franchise signed linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley and wide receiver DeVante Parker to contract extensions, there are questions regarding the likelihood of adding DeAndre Hopkins.

Hopkins visited the Patriots in mid-June, speaking with the coaching staff and touring the team’s facility. Following the meeting, New England felt optimistic that the All-Pro receiver would eventually agree to terms on a contract and join the team for the 2023 season.

However, the 31-year-old wide receiver remains a free agent heading into July. While both the Patriots and Tennessee Titans made offers, they weren’t what Hopkins wanted and he planned to be patient with the hope other teams got involved or better proposals were made.

So, New England turned its focus to rewarding two players on its current roster. Parker signed a three-year extension worth up to $33 million and Bentley landed a two-year extension for $18.75 million. While it does impact the team’s cap space and long-term plans at wide receiver, it appears the door isn’t closed on adding the All-Pro wideout.

Jeff Howe of The Athletic shared his belief that Parker’s extension is independent of anything going on with Hopkins. While the two wide receivers play a similar role, the new deal was more about ensuring New England had multiple veteran receivers under contract long-term.

It’s an insight shared by Phil A. Perry of NBC Sports Boston, who reported that Parker’s contract doesn’t influence New England’s interest in signing Hopkins.

The Titans and Patriots both remain in the mix for Hopkins heading into July, but it’s also made clear that he isn’t close to making a decision. With only two known suitors, the veteran receiver is expected to take his time and hope other clubs get involved before training camp.
