It’s hard to argue with the success Justin Herbert has had since Jim Harbaugh took over as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. They’ve won 11 games in each of the past two seasons, earning a trip to the postseason each time.
Yet, the Chargers still haven’t found a way to get past the wild-card round, and they’ve lost by double-digits in both games. Now, the Chargers have to figure out how to help Herbert get them deeper in the playoffs.
On Monday, the Chargers may have taken a step in the right direction by adding an experienced offensive mind to their coaching staff. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chargers have hired Adam Gase as an “assistant coach focused on the passing game.”
Gase, 47, hasn’t had a job in football since 2020 after he was fired as head coach of the New York Jets. Before that, he was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Gase holds a win-loss record of 32-48 in the NFL, and he has a postseason loss on his resume too.
But Gase won’t be asked to lead the team this time around. He’ll just be tapping into his expertise on offense, helping the passing game be more impactful. If it all goes well, Herbert will take yet another step forward in his development, and now Gase gets to work with one of the most gifted quarterbacks in the NFL.
