It has been a very busy few weeks for the Kansas City Chiefs. The franchise tagged Trey Smith and traded Pro Bowler Joe Thuney. They let DeAndre Hopkins walk in NFL free agency but re-signed Marquise Brown. But their biggest move of the offseason so far was bringing in a much needed tackle, Jaylon Moore. However, they are far from done.
On Wednesday it was revealed that superstars Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones have both restructured their 2025 contracts. The moves free up just under $50 million in new cap space for the team. While a chunk of that will be used to pay off some of the moves they have made this month, let’s look at five impact veterans the Kansas City Chiefs could target in free agency soon.
Tyler Lockett

The Seattle Seahawks ended a fan-favorite era when they cut ties with beloved wide receiver Tyler Lockett. The 32-year-old’s best days are behind him. But KC doesn’t need him to be a WR1, or even a WR2. As a slot option for an affordable rate, Lockett has more than enough left to make a huge impact in 2025.

Nick Chubb

The Chiefs could use more options at running back. Not necessarily to take Isiah Pacheco’s job, but to at least challenge his role and be a change up option. That is why Kansas City could take a flyer on four-time Pro Bowler Nick Chubb. The Browns veteran struggled in his first season back from a serious knee injury. However, on a prove-it deal another year removed from the injury, the team could get a very good player at a fair rate for one season.

Von Miller

At 35 years old, Von Miller’s best days are far behind him. However, KC needs more pass rushers. And in 13 games he still posted six sacks in 2024. As part of a rotation, the future Hall-of-Famer could be a good fit for the Chiefs as a veteran with championship pedigree who fills a unique need for next season.

DeMarcus Lawrence

If the Kansas City Chiefs want to spend a bit to add pass rush help, Cowboys great DeMarcus Lawrence could be an option. He is also exiting his prime and was limited to just four games last season due to injury. However, he just went to back-to-back Pro Bowls before this past season. He is a player KC should consider if his price doesn’t skyrocket this month.
JK Dobbins

After three injury-filled seasons, JK Dobbins had a very nice bounce back season in 2024 for the Chargers. However, that injury bug bit him again late in the season. Nevertheless, if the team would like more options to platoon with Pacheco next season, Dobbins would be a very strong option to bolster their backfield in 2025.
