Although the move is not official, the Las Vegas Raiders are fully expected to make Klint Kubiak their next head coach once the Super Bowl is over. While Kubiak is likely far busier helping his Seattle Seahawks prepare for the upcoming battle against the New England Patriots, he may also be working back channels to piece together his eventual coaching staff.
Recently, Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer connected the Raiders to Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. The Browns coach is still under contract for two more seasons in Cleveland, but he was also reportedly “visibly upset” upon learning he was passed over for their head coaching job for former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
“As for Schwartz, if he’s not back in Cleveland, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Klint Kubiak make a run at landing him, once he coaches his last game as Seahawks OC on Sunday.”
While Kubiak can clearly handle the Raiders’ offense, he’ll need a strong coordinator to handle playcalling for the defense. Schwartz would certainly fit the bill.
As much as Cleveland’s players would like to keep Schwartz around, being passed over for the head coaching vacancy could lead him elsewhere, and getting to coach another elite pass-rusher like Maxx Crosby could be what it takes to get a deal done.
