The New York Giants have had a busy offseason, making a coaching change from Brian Daboll to John Harbaugh. Several other smaller coaching changes have since followed, including the Giants hiring a new offensive, defensive, and special teams coordinator.
Most of the Giants’ staff is now set, though there could still be some smaller moves on the way. While the Giants have hired Dennard Wilson to be their defensive coordinator, John Harbaugh tried hiring a former NFL head coach for that role first.
According to Harbaugh himself, he spoke to Rex Ryan “at length” for the Giants’ DC job before settling on Wilson.
“I talked to Rex about that job at length,” Harbaugh said. “Rex is a guy I love and have a lot of respect for.”
Ryan was Harbaugh’s first defensive coordinator when John initially accepted the Baltimore Ravens’ head coaching job. Ryan lasted just one season before being hired as the head coach of the New York Jets.
Ryan hasn’t been involved in coaching since he was let go from his job as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2016. Though, the 63-year-old has often expressed an interest in returning to the coaching profession, as a defensive coordinator or a head coach.
It’s not known why Ryan didn’t take the Giants’ defensive coordinator job, if it was ever offered.
