The Washington Commanders surprised everyone, possibly even Jayden Daniels, on Tuesday with the decision to mutually part ways with offensive coordinator and playcaller Kliff Kingsbury. The Commanders also moved on from defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.
Yet it was the decision to part ways with Kingsbury that drew nearly universal criticism. Washington’s franchise quarterback may be part of that group, even if he likely wouldn’t admit it publicly.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Daniels and other “key Commanders offensive players are disappointed” with the team moving on from Kingsbury.
Though, with Daniels taking time to express his support for Kingsbury in his press conference on Monday, Washington’s decision to move on comes as a sizable surprise. Especially considering how Kingsbury was such a key component in Daniels having arguably the best season for a rookie QB in NFL history, helping the Commanders win 12 games and reach the NFC Conference Championship.
Nevertheless, Kingsbury apparently felt like moving on was the right call too. Perhaps that means a better job, like becoming an NFL head coach again, is on the horizon for the former coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Last time Kingsbury was a head coach, the 46-year-old led the Cardinals to a 28-37-1 record across four full seasons. If given another chance at the apple, he’ll undoubtedly have to do better to keep his job this time around.
