A few weeks ago, when J.J. McCarthy was asked to comment on the Minnesota Vikings‘ ongoing starting quarterback competition with Kyler Murray, many felt he came off sounding bitter. Others took a brief look at the situation, where Murray is viewed as the favorite to start, and thought McCarthy’s days in the Twin Cities were numbered, with him possibly even feeling hurt emotionally to the point where he demands a trade.

“It’s just like two guys in a classroom,” McCarthy said previously. “He sits on one side, and I sit on the other side. It’s the coaches’ responsibility to teach us and coach us. Awkwardness? It’s just like the same feeling when you’re in high school, and there’s another person on the other side of the room. That’s just kinda how it is.”

Based on McCarthy’s latest comments at the Vikings’ mandatory minicamp, those reports and assumptions may have been premature and unfair to the 23-year-old.

On Tuesday, McCarthy painted a much different picture with his comments. One that won’t generate any criticism.

“I think I made it very clear I wanted to be here, before I got here. And I love this organization, I love the coaching staff, I absolutely love these players to death. This is where I want to be. I feel like I can thrive in this system. Everything played out exactly how I wanted it and I wouldn’t want anything else to change.”

That’s exactly what the Vikings wanted to hear from their 2024 first-round pick. A sound bite that shows he’s not the scorned, immature person that many were starting to assume. It’s also the type of attitude that can galvanize a locker room, showcasing some of the traits that have made him a great leader, dating back to his days winning the College Football Playoff at Michigan.

While it’s a step in the right direction, and one that others around the league will surely take note of, none of it will matter if McCarthy hasn’t taken the proper steps to improve on the football field. Time will tell on that front, but so far, reports have been positive coming out of Minnesota.
