In 2024, the Minnesota Vikings traded up to select Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the first round. The hope was that McCarthy would quickly assert himself as the franchise quarterback in Minnesota. Two years later, the Vikings have added Kyler Murray, who is supremely confident in his abilities.

Now, the Vikings are pitting the two former first-round picks toe-to-toe in a competition to become the next quarterback to lead Kevin O’Connell’s high-powered offense. Early signs point to Murray leading the competition, which is to be expected for the two-time Pro Bowl QB who has 87 starts compared to McCarthy’s 10.

We haven’t heard much from the two QBs since the competition officially got underway, but the early reactions based on the two’s comments indicate that McCarthy is operating with some shade, or vitriol, if you will. That may not change. In fact, the tension here could continue to get worse.

Recently, Jason La Canfora of Casino Guru spoke to a group of NFL executives, front office personnel, and player agents. One longtime agent had an interesting take on the Vikings’ QB competition.

“I don’t think that dynamic between those two would work out very well,” said one longtime NFL agent who has represented many starting QBs.

Murray seemed to be respectful and understanding of his circumstances when addressing the media.

“My confidence is unshakable,” Murray said. “That’s how I feel about myself, regardless of what happens.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy has taken heat for the way he reacted.

“It’s just like two guys in a classroom,” McCarthy said. “He sits on one side, and I sit on the other side. It’s the coaches’ responsibility to teach us and coach us. Awkwardness? It’s just like the same feeling when you’re in high school, and there’s another person on the other side of the room. That’s just kinda how it is.”

Yet, these are just a few footnotes or seconds trying to describe the atmosphere in Minnesota’s QB room. Meanwhile, Murray and McCarthy are spending hours together behind the scenes. It’s possible the tension has only since heightened, or maybe the two competitors are leaving it all out on the field instead. Of course, there’s always the possibility that McCarthy, or even Murray, requests a trade when the other doesn’t get their way.
