As much of a dream it is for an athlete to reach the NFL, they don’t get to pick which team they play for. Their only option is to report to the franchise that drafts them, but once that four-year rookie contract ends, players can reach free agency for the first time in their careers. For Foster Moreau, that exciting opportunity came this past offseason, after four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Moreau, 26, enjoyed a breakout season where he racked up a career-high 420 receiving yards, catching passes from Derek Carr. But Carr was let go and later signed with the New Orleans Saints, where he’ll pick up where he left off, as the team’s starting quarterback.
Once he reached free agency, Moreau quickly took a visit to the Saints, where, if signed, he’d get to continue building off the chemistry developed with Carr over the past four seasons.
Except, the Saints’ team doctors noticed an issue with Moreau’s sports physical, where it was determined that the New Orleans, Louisiana native had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which he was previously completely unaware of. In other words, the Saints’ doctors realized Moreau had cancer, which caused the athlete to focus on his health, while he stepped away from football.
But Moreau has since received a positive diagnosis on his battle with cancer and is now ready to return to the game he loves. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, that second chance will still come with the Saints, where Moreau is signing a three-year, $12 million contract.
Moreau’s contract includes $8 million in guarantees, plus an additional $3 million available via incentives. More importantly, he’s healthy again and ready to join his new team for the upcoming season.
