Few, if any, American sports franchises are as recognizable as the Dallas Cowboys are. Some athletes grow up, dreaming of playing for ‘America’s Team.’

That was the case for cornerback Trevon Diggs, whose favorite team was the Cowboys, even before they made him a second-round pick as the 51st overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Cowboys’ decision paid immediate dividends, with Diggs recording an NFL-high 11 interceptions and earning first-team All-Pro honors in just his second season. He then followed that with another Pro Bowl season in Year Three.

Yet, it’s been downhill nearly ever since for Diggs and the Cowboys. He’s played in just 19 out of a possible 51 games for the Cowboys across the past three seasons. It doesn’t help that he signed a five-year, $97 million extension in 2023 and has recorded just three interceptions since.

Now, Diggs is working his way back from both a concussion and a knee injury. The 27-year-old is currently on injured reserve, but the Cowboys have designated him to return on Nov. 30. That gave the Cowboys 21 days to determine whether they’d be placing Diggs back on the active roster or shut him down for the rest of the season.

Diggs has indeed been practicing with the team. He’s even declared himself ready to play. However, the Cowboys will not be activating him for Sunday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, and that may have added some tension to their relationship.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Diggs had a “great week of practice.” Yet, he’s had multiple sources indicate that the relationship between Diggs and the Cowboys has “soured” and “been severed.”

Diggs had also previously been very vocal against the Cowboys trading Micah Parsons, which surely didn’t improve the vibes in Dallas. Now, it’s possible Diggs and the Cowboys are headed for a split this offseason. If so, several teams, including likely the New England Patriots (thanks to his brother Stefon Diggs’ presence), will have interest in the cornerback with the ball skills of a receiver.
