Denver Broncos general manager John Elway has made it known he wants quarterback Peyton Manning back for another season. However if that does not happen, the Broncos organization is prepared to move on with backup quarterback Brock Osweiler (via NFL.com).
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that sources within the Broncos organization see Osweiler “as a guy they feel very good about.”
Rapoport further reported…
The reviews internally on Brock Osweiler are high, so if Peyton Manning does not come back, they do feel confident that they have a quarterback who can step in and have some level of success in there after Peyton Manning, whenever he does decide to retire.
The Broncos signed Manning in 2012 and also prepared for his eventual departure by drafting Osweiler in the second round of the NFL draft that year. Because Manning has maintained such pristine health and played so superbly, Osweiler has only participated in 12 preseason games and a few garbage-time drives during the regular season. Overall, he’s completed 17-of-30 passes for 159 yards and a score during the regular season.
Should Osweiler be the quarterback under center in 2015, he would definitely benefit from the Broncos being able to re-sign Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas, who are both set to become free agents.
It would take at least a couple seasons for Osweiler to reach the point where he’s considered an upper-echelon quarterback in the NFL, which means the Broncos would definitely take a step back if Manning retires.
