From the moment he was hired as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, it was as if everyone expected Bill Belichick to eventually return to the NFL. Yet, last year’s hiring cycle came and went without a peep from Belichick.
However, now that there are seven more teams, including his beloved New York Giants, who are seeking a new head coach, has anything changed for the future first ballot Hall of Famer?
“Nothing’s changed,” Belichick said. “I’m where I was a month ago. I’m here at North Carolina. I really appreciate the love and support that we’ve gotten from the community down here, from the school, from Chancellor Roberts, the ADs, Bubba Cunningham, Steve Newmark, working with Mike Lombardi and our staff here. We’re building a good program and I’m excited about the direction we’re headed in.”
Of course, these comments came before the Baltimore Ravens shockingly moved on from another future first ballot Hall of Famer in John Harbaugh. Still, we’d expect Harbaugh to say the same thing as before, “nothing’s changed.”
Still, we can’t help but wonder if any owners and/or NFL general managers have privately wondered what their teams would look like with a six-time Super Bowl champion leading the charge. Though perhaps Belichick’s recent track record at North Carolina, leading them to just a 4-8 record, is scaring some away. His being 73 years old likely doesn’t help either.
Nevertheless, Belichick and the NFL may truly be done with one another. For now, anyway.
