New York Yankees, Miami Marlins have reportedly discussed blockbuster trade swapping infielder for pitching

The New York Yankees and Miami Marlins discussed a trade last year that would’ve seen infielder Gleyber Torres dealt to Miami in exchange for starting pitcher Pablo Lopez. One year later, the two clubs are once again involved in trade talks.

Miami later traded Lopez to the Minnesota Twins after Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman reportedly backed out on the swap. It worked out for the Marlins, who acquired All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez. While Arraez has been everything Miami hoped for and more, its front office still seems to be thinking about a missed opportunity with New York.

According to Randy Miller of NJ.com, the Marlins have talked to the Yankees about Torres once again this summer. In those negotiations, New York made it clear to Miami that Edward Cabrera or Braxton Garrett needs to be in the deal, which is a no-go for the Marlins.

“According to the source, the Marlins have been pushing hard for Torres, but the Yankees’ asking price has been too steep for their liking — two 25-year-old starting pitchers, right-hander Edward Cabrera and lefty Braxton Garrett, plus two prospects.”

The Yankees have made pitching a priority and their insistence on receiving young starting pitching with multiple years of contract control matches the value of a hitter offering similar trade value. However, the current price tag on Torres is evidently too much for the Marlins.

Miami has also been involved in the pitching market. After acquiring David Robertson from the New York Mets, the Marlins talked to the St. Louis Cardinals about Jordan Montgomery before he was traded to the Texas Rangers. Miami has also been tied with interest in Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson.

A Torres trade remains unlikely this summer, but the Marlins will likely revisit the matter with the Yankees during the MLB Winter Meetings.
