The New York Rangers placed defenseman Tony DeAngelo on waivers Sunday.
DeAngelo, who has been a healthy scratch on two occasions this season, has just one point and a minus-6 rating in six games since signing a two-year, $9.6 million contract extension in October. He had an assist and a minus-3 rating in New York’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
Rangers coach David Quinn was asked Sunday about reports that DeAngelo was involved in an altercation with a teammate in the tunnel following the loss to the Penguins. The Athletic reported that the teammate was goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, who was held out of practice for “maintenance” on Sunday.
“This isn’t about one incident, it’s not about one thing,” Quinn said on Sunday. “This is a situation that the organization felt was best at this current time, and we’ll see how the situation plays out.”

Should DeAngelo clear waivers before noon ET on Monday, he can either remain on the Rangers’ active roster or be assigned to the taxi squad and sent to Hartford of the American Hockey League.
DeAngelo, 25, tied for fourth among NHL defensemen in both goals (15) and points (53) in 68 games last season — all career highs. He became the first Rangers defenseman with at least 50 points in a season since Hall of Famer Brian Leetch in 2001-02.
DeAngelo has 106 points (24 goals, 82 assists) in 206 career games with the Arizona Coyotes and Rangers. He was dealt to New York as part of a June 2017 trade that shipped Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta to Arizona.
DeAngelo was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning with the 19th overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft.
