A notable analyst for the New York Mets believes the franchise’s top prospect could earn a starting spot on the big league roster much sooner than expected.
We are just a couple of weeks away from the start of the 2025 MLB season and there is a huge amount of excitement about the New York Mets. The club stunned the baseball world last year by reaching the NLCS. During the winter they retained key pieces from the 2024 roster and added superstar outfielder Juan Soto to the mix.

Heading into the new season they look to be legitimate contenders to reach the World Series in 2025. However, there is a clear weakness, and that is the starting rotation. When fully healthy, there were concerns about their current staff. However, new addition Frankie Montas is sidelined for the next couple of months with a lat strain and Sean Manaea is also dealing with an oblique issue.
Yet, the team has not looked to add a replacement from outside the organization. Recent rumors suggested they prefer the internal options. One of them could be No. 1 prospect Brandon Sproat. A player, SNY Mets prospects expert Joe DeMayo believes could be pitching in Queens early this season.
Could Brandon Sproat be starting for the New York Mets by May?

“The Mets have a couple of options [to eventually promote to the major] but there is no better option than Brandon Sproat. I have him listed as the No. 1 prospect in the system… Brandon Sproat is a guy that I think if he can go down to Triple-A and get off to a hot start, he can find his way on to the Mets rotation within the first couple of months of the season,” DeMayo said on a Thursday edition of “Baseball Night In New York.”
“He really has electric stuff. He has a fastball that will sit in the mid 90s and get up to triple digits. He has a plus changeup and he has a sweeper. He has a hard cutter. This is a guy that projects long-term as a No. 2 type starter.”
The 24-year-old also finished 2024 as the No. 1 prospect in the New York Mets farm system on MLB.com. And he held on to the top spot this year. Rumblings have been that Sproat could be promoted midway through the season. However, this new prediction suggests his skills could make a move up undeniable sooner as the team battles injuries to the staff.
