The New York Mets are reportedly still active on the free agent market and reportedly in pursuit of slugger JD Martinez and New York Yankees veteran Gio Urshela.

This is a very unique offseason for the Mets. After making two blockbuster trades earlier this year that added a boatload of money to their payroll, the team was expected to be a bit more conservative in their moves compared to previous years.

Although the organization made a hard push to land gifted Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, it looks like they have reverted to their original strategy of bargain shopping in free agency. In recent days, they have been linked to potential moves for second-tier starters like Lucas Giolito, and a reunion with former homegrown talent Justin Turner.

Well, a pair of new reports gave an update on some more players they are targeting heading into the new year. On Thursday, New York Post MLB insider Jon Heyman claimed that the organization is one of three teams chasing six-time All-Star JD Martinez. The Los Angeles Angels and Arizona Diamondbacks are two of the other teams in the market for the power-hitting DH.

Heyman also reported the team’s interest in Martinez earlier this month and this latest news seems to confirm they are still keeping an eye on his market.

New York Mets in discussions with New York Yankees veteran Gio Urshela

Fellow New York Post MLB writer Mark W. Sanchez reported Thursday that the team is also in discussions with Yankees and Angels veteran Gio Urshela. The Mets planned to address third base in 2024 with in-house options. However, with stud prospect Ronny Mauricio potentially out for the season with an ACL injury, the organization is looking at adding some affordable veteran depth.

The Mets are also still looking to add another starting pitcher and have been linked to Japanese pitcher Shota Imanaga, and the aforementioned Giolito.
