The New York Mets are reportedly in negotiations for a reunion with former fan-favorite Justin Turner to potentially be their starting third baseman in 2024.
Over the last month, the Mets have been one of the most active teams in MLB free agency. While they haven’t made the splash in the market that teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers have, they still made some key signings. Such as adding New York Yankees veteran Luis Severino.
The organization is viewed as one of the top contenders in the market for young Japanese ace Yoshinbobu Yamamoto, but they could make a small but meaningful move soon that should excite long-time Mets fans.
On Friday night, New York Post MLB insider Mike Puma reported that “the Mets, according to a source, have been engaged in discussions with [Justin] Turner’s camp after initiating contact with the former All-Star early in the offseason.”

The Mets received some very disappointing news this past week when it was revealed that one of their best prospects, Ronny Mauricio, likely suffered a torn ACL last weekend and is expected to miss most if not all of the next season.
The news is highly frustrating since the Dominican native showed some signs of his potential during a cup of coffee with the big league roster this year. Furthermore, heading into 2024, he was seen as the top candidate to serve as their starting third baseman.
Even at 39, Justin Turner would be a rock-solid option at third and at an affordable rate. After playing four seasons for the Mets from 2011 to 2013, Turner went on to become a two-time All-Star and a key player on the Los Angeles Dodgers’ championship team in 2020.
Last season he played for the Boston Red Sox and delivered good numbers for the American League East squad. Posting a .276 AVG, .345 OBP, and .455 SLG, he hit 23 home runs, knocked in 96 runs batted in, and had 86 runs for the last-place team.
Turner was popular with many Mets fans during his time with the team due to his gutsy style, fire, and ability to play multiple positions well.
