A pair of top MLB insiders believe that while the New York Mets front office is publicly acting like they won’t make any more notable moves before the start of the season in March, there are likely internal conversations about doing the opposite.

With MLB spring training 2024 underway, teams like the Mets are in the early stages of preparation for the new season. This time last year there was a lot of hope around the team coming off a 101-win season and the addition of league legend Justin Verlander. However, the team was a massive disappointment, and Verlander — as well as Max Scherzer — is no longer on the roster.

Yet the organization did not use their wealth to fill those holes and instead replaced them with journeymen like Luis Severino and Sean Manea. Making matters worse is despite a notable injury to ace Kodai Senga that will sideline him for two months of 2024, the word is the organization still won’t pursue one of the talented free-agent pitchers available.

However, New York Post MLB insiders Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman claimed Tuesday that while they are the New York Mets are saying one thing they are talking about something else “behind the scenes.” In a new edition of their podcast, Sherman made the case for the team to sign Yankees veteran Jordan Montgomery “Because at this moment, I would argue that it works for their plan today and it works for their plan tomorrow,” (via NJ.com)

Later in the conversation, the pair of baseball reporters claimed that while the team is playing conservatively in public, signing a player like Montgomery is definitely being considered at the team facilities in Florida for spring training.

“I know the Mets say they’re not doing anything, but I think they’re talking about it behind the scenes,” Heyman. This led Sherman to respond, “They’re definitely talking about it behind the scenes.”

Montgomery, as well as Blake Snell, are two worthwhile pitchers still available with the start of the MLB season just weeks away. Both are represented by super agent Scott Boras and reportedly have high asking prices.
