Aaron Rodgers just got a lot happier.
The New York Jets had trouble protecting their quarterbacks in 2023, allowing 64 sacks while finishing with the 29th-ranked scoring offense. General manager Joe Douglas has already made improvements, signing right tackle Morgan Moses, and now he’s doubled down by making an even more significant addition.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets are signing former Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith. The contract is reportedly a one-year deal worth up to $20 million.
Smith, 33, gained a reputation for being one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL during his peak, being named to the 2010s NFL All-Decade team while earning two All-Pro selections and being named to eight Pro Bowls.
But the Cowboys moved on from him this past offseason after he missed 37 games across the past four seasons. Smith hasn’t played a full season since 2015. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t still play at a high level.
Despite starting just 13 games last season, Smith still earned second-team All-Pro honors and graded fifth among all offensive tackles per Pro Football Focus. Smith only allowed one sack while committing three penalties in 847 snaps played.
If healthy, he has the potential to make a massive impact on the Jets’ season in 2024. The Jets also hold the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but this signing allows a bit more flexibility to grab the best player available, regardless of position.
