After finishing 30th in scoring a season ago, it’s clear the New York Giants need to make changes to their offense. With coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka returning, it appears those upgrades will have to involve improving the roster.

We’ve already seen GM Joe Schoen take that approach in free agency, adding multiple offensive linemen to help fix a unit that allowed more sacks than any other team in the NFL last season. But what about quarterback, or wide receiver?

A year after cheering Daniel Jones to victory as the Giants won their first playoff game since 2011, now some fans want to give up on New York’s franchise quarterback because he got hurt last season, a common theme in the 26-year-old’s career.

If you’ve been closely following the Giants’ draft rumors, you’ve heard plenty about the team’s evaluation process, which has involved meeting with multiple QB prospects. This would seem to indicate that the Giants are seriously contemplating replacing Jones in the near future, yet, according to ESPN’s Matt Miller, that might not be the case.

“A high-ranking official with the team told me their draft plans are unlikely to include a first-round passer. However, that doesn’t rule out a quarterback being a target in Round 2, where the team owns pick No. 47. Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon’s Bo Nix are expected to be off the board by that point, but a small trade up on Day 2 — similar to what the Titans did last year to land Will Levis at pick No. 33 — is possible.”

ESPN’s Matt Miller on New York Giants’ draft plans

It makes sense not to target a first-round quarterback for a team that signed their starter to a $160 million extension last season. How about getting him some help at the receiver position?

Based on Miller’s report, the Giants might finally be planning to do just that: add a playmaking weapon that can help their young quarterback thrive. After Saquon Barkley’s departure, now the need for an injection of talent on offense has only increased, but the Giants have a plan in place. We’ll see if it makes sense in due time.
